Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a short-term (12-20 weeks) early intervention model that helps the lowest achieving first-grader children develop effective strategies for reading and writing and reach grade level.  The goal of Reading Recovery is to help children become successful readers and writers who have increased capacity for reading development through classroom instruction.   It is supplemental to good classroom instruction.

They key elements are:

  * Intensive, daily one-on-one instruction for first-grade children most at risk for reading failure;

  * Year and a half -long training course (9 graduate hours), and continuing professional

     development through which educators learn and continue to explore proven, researched-

     based theory procedures;

  * Research and evaluation to monitor results and provide support for participating educators

     and instintutions;

  * A long range plan to chart the course towards full implementaion and literacy for all children.

It is the goal of the Northcentral and Wilbur D. Mills Educational Service Cooperative to provide teacher training in the Reading Recovery model, implement Reading Recovery in the school districts by serving low-achieving first-grade students, provide continuing professional development sessions for trained Reading Recovery teachers, and make regular school visits to coach, model and aide all Reading Recovery teachers as they work with children.  In-service workshops for principals and classroom teachers to provide knowledege and understanding of how Reading Recovery works with the classroom reading program as a supplement and provide a safety net for at-risk readers.

We continue to see the impact and gains for students who were once considered at-risk for reading failure.  Teachers are encouraged to continually monitor these students in small groups if needed because while the intense nature of one-on-one tutorial accelerates students to achieve success their continued success depends on the supportive classroom they return to where they are given opportunities to practice the strategies they have learned.

Reading Recovery is making a difference in the lives of at-risk children of Northcentral and Central Arkansas.
